Happy Birthday, Robert McCloskey!

Wednesday September 15, 2010

Today is Robert McCloskey’s birthday. He would have been 96 today.

Robert McCloskey tops my list of favorite children’s book illustrators of all time. His drawings are simply perfect. His line work is so confident that his illustrations appear effortless. He masterfully captured gesture and mood  in every picture. He only wrote and illustrated eight books, but of that eight, two won the Caldecott Medal (Make Way for Ducklings in 1941 and Time of Wonder in 1957) and two received  Caldecott Honors (Blueberries for Sal in 1948 and One Morning in Maine in 1952). That’s an amazing accomplishment!

So Happy Birthday, Robert McCloskey! I think I’ll celebrate by reading Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man. Clackety bang! Clackety bang!
