Three Book Year
Monday January 2, 2017
I was thinking about the upcoming year yesterday, and I realized that for the first time in my seventeen year career as a children’s book author/illustrator, 2017 will be a three book year for me. In other words, I will have three new books released this year. One I wrote and illustrated, the other two I illustrated for other authors. They are:
- Even Monsters Need to Sleep by Lisa Wheeler. This is a fun bedtime book about a little monster reluctant to go to sleep until her dad reads her a book all about other monsters going to sleep. Lisa writes terrific rhymes and the illustrations are big and full of detail. Monsters will be published by Balzer+Bray and it comes out on March 14th.
- Hattie & Hudson. This is the first book I both wrote and illustrated since 2012’s If I Built a House and I’m really excited about it. It’s different from my previous books because it’s the first book I’ve written that features a girl as the main character, instead of a boy or man. It’s also the first book I’ve written that’s non-rhyming, which believe it or not, was much harder for me than writing in rhyme. It went through several versions (including starting out as a rhyming book) until I finally got it right. My editor, Joan Powers, was very patient and guided me through the whole process. Hattie & Hudson will be published by Candlewick Press and it comes out on May 9th.
- Eugenia Lincoln and the Unexpected Package by Kate DiCamillo. This is the fourth book in the Tales From Deckawoo Drive series of chapter books that have been released over the past three years. Like the other books in the series, the illustrations are in black and white and feature the characters from the original Mercy Watson books. Eugenia will be published by Candlewick Press. Look for it in August.
I wish you all a happy 2017 filled with beautiful books.
